New book tells true tale of ill-fated 14-year old recruit in War on Drugs
Prisoner of War: The Story of White Boy Rick and the War on Drugs recounts the true saga of a 14-year old Detroit kid recruited by the FBI to spy on a politically-connected drug gang.
Richard J. Wershe, Jr., known in the media as White Boy Rick, did a good job, but when he exposed top-level police corruption, he became too hot to handle. The FBI abandoned him. He tried to become a wholesale drug dealer, but he was soon caught and sentenced to life in prison.
This true story typifies the endless defeats in the trillion-dollar War on Drugs. It is a policy failure that has lasted nearly 50 years. The book recounts many of the lost battles and bad decisions in this so-called war.
The author, Vince Wade, is a veteran television investigative reporter. Wade is the winner of three Emmys and the first-place award for Best Local TV News Documentary in the New York International Film Festival.
