Both Were Just 17
Washington is in a tizzy this week over allegations Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh attempted to rape a 15-year-old girl when he was “just 17.” His supporters argue it was just a youthful indiscretion if it did happen.
Meanwhile, in about 15 movie theaters around Washington, D.C. this week, there’s a movie showing called “White Boy Rick.” It’s about Richard Wershe, Jr. who became an FBI drug informant at 14, was dropped, turned to drug-dealing and was arrested when he was “just 17.” Is this ironic or what?
Kavanaugh is now a Supreme Court Nominee and Wershe spent 29 years in prison—his entire adult life. Both stories are about our “justice” system and how we treat youth crime. If Rick Wershe was held accountable and sent to prison for life for a non-violent drug crime committed when he was “just 17” what does that tell us about Brett Kavanaugh and our nation’s fundamental belief in equal justice under the law?
Just sayin’…
