Is the Trump Thrill Gone?
Defeated former President Donald Trump held his first rally-of-the-faithful for 2022 in rural Arizona. It was more of the same-old, same-old and the crowd noticed.
I want to share with you something about the Trump rally that the news media missed. But let’s briefly recap the event.
The Usual Lies
His rambling, disjointed speech didn’t contain any news. It was filled with his standard boastful exaggerations:
Trump:
“Ah, that’s a big crowd out there. I tell you what, the cars are stretched—they say 25 miles.”
His usual self-pity:
Trump:
“We had a tremendous victory in Arizona which was taken away…The Big Lie. The Big Lie is a lot of bullshit.”
And crowd-pleasing attacks on President Biden:
Trump:
“Few could have imagined he would be such a disaster for this country.”
Headed for the Exits
But after about an hour of Trump repeating and rehashing his standard, broken-record stump speech, segments of the crowd started heading for the exits.
This is the part of the rally the news media didn’t report. The Trump Kool-Aid drinkers began to leave in droves, long before his speech was over. Most had been standing without chairs for half a day on a windswept patch of ground accessible by a single, two-lane road.
Trump continued his disjointed harangue for another hour, but many of the Trump fans had had enough. There was no hint about whether he would run for President in 2024, and that’s all most of the crowd was interested in.
The Trump die-hards at the Arizona rally wanted to know about the politics of the future. Trump showed them he is mired in the past.
